Fossicker Stays

Gateway to the Ophir Goldfields – Home of Australia’s first payable Gold Discovery in 1851.

The Property of “Wildwood” adjoins the Historic Ophir Reserve, which consists of 029approximately 450 acres of mine workings, mainly from the late 1800’s.  No permits or permission are required to detect in this area and gold is still regularly found in the reserve.  Significant workings were also carried out on the property of “Wildwood” and the initial Gold Discovery in 1851 was in fact on “Wildwood” on the Lower Lewis Ponds Creek, of which approximately 5km runs through the property of “Wildwood”.

Guests staying at “Wildwood Cottage” will be permitted to detect/fossick the largely “untouched” property of “Wildwood” consisting of 1200 acres. While the adjacent Ophir Fossicking Reserve has had thousands of hopeful fossickers crawling over it's 450 acres, Wildwood has been in private hands for the best part of the last 100 years and is almost 3 times the size!. Small gold may be found panning or sluicing in the creek, or larger nuggets may still be found with metal detectors around the vast property. Nuggets upwards of 1 ounce have been found from time to time on the property during the last century.

Larry and Dee have recently decided to use “Wildwood Cottage’s” unique position at the gateway to the Ophir Goldfields, to offer fossickers a unique opportunity to enjoy your hobby/passion.
